Railway transportation

TRANSPORTATION OF GOODS BY RAIL

Cargo delivery by rail is a common method of transportation. This is due to the geographical and climatic features, as well as the specifics of the development of the country's logistics infrastructure. In addition, the growing popularity of rail freight transportation is associated with the active use of railway lines for transit transportation of goods from China and other Asian countries to Europe.

Among the advantages of transporting goods by railway wagons are:

∎ Favorable rates compared to other shipping methods. Transportation by rail over medium and long distances is cheaper than automobile or air transportation.

∎ Wide geographical coverage. The railway infrastructure covers hard-to-reach regions. For many of them, the delivery and dispatch of goods is possible only by air or by rail, since there is no road connection.

∎ Independent of weather conditions. Heavy rains, snowfalls, winds, and a sharp drop in temperature practically do not affect rail freight in any way, as often happens, for example, with air freight. Therefore, the delivery is carried out strictly on schedule.

∎ Versatility. Railway transport can be used to transport a wide variety of goods, including dangerous and oversized goods, unlike cars.

∎ Security. Cargo is guarded along the entire route, including during processing and downtime at stations and transport terminals. The risk of theft on the railway is several times lower than in road transport.

Types of transportation by railway transport:

Wagon trains. This method of delivery involves placing the cargo in a separate carriage or wagons. It is suitable for transporting large quantities of products. Various types of wagons can be used for transportation – covered wagons, gondola wagons, tanks, car carriers, hoppers for bulk cargo, refrigerators and refrigerated containers, etc.

Containerized. This is one of the most popular shipping methods. Container transportation by rail is often used as part of international multimodal schemes. Cargoes are delivered in universal containers that reliably protect them from damage and theft, accelerate loading and unloading operations, and allow you to do without intermediate storage of goods in a warehouse.

National teams. This method is great for small batches of goods. Railway transportation of combined cargoes involves combining the products of several customers in one container or wagon. This ensures the optimization of transportation costs for each of the customers.

What determines the cost of railway transportation:

The costs of each transportation are calculated individually. They depend primarily on the basic railway fares, which are determined by the route. Also, the price of railway transportation is influenced by the characteristics of the cargo – weight, dimensions, the presence of special storage requirements (special packaging, etc.). The calculation of delivery times is carried out after specifying the recipient's city. In addition, a list of necessary additional services is important, for example, targeted delivery to the recipient's warehouse or insurance.
